Message From Our
President
The Holidays are over, but there is still
plenty to do at Etz Chaim. Our Social Action Committee
has been busily working. After their very
successful concert to raise funds for Bomba Israel,
their next event will be the Scholar-in-Residence
program this weekend. Our congregation is very fortunate
to have Rabbi David Saperstein, the director of the
Religious Action Center, joining us for this event on
October 13th & 14th. He will be speaking to us on
social justice. This weekend is being sponsored by a
bequest from the Bettye and Lou Kaplan Social Action
Fund. Check this e-bulletin and our website for full
details.
Our
popular Tummler1 program is back
again on Sunday mornings. The 'Tummler' meets in the
Stoller-Soreff Social Hall starting at 9:30 on a drop-in
basis. It's a great way to socialize and meet fellow
congregants. All you have to do to be a part of this is
enjoy noshing2 and
schmoozing3 with others. You don't
even have to have children in religious school- everyone
is welcome to stop by.
Translations:
1) tummler - One such as a social
director who encourages guest or
audience participation.
2) noshing - Eating tasty snacks such as
bagels, lox, and cookies (noshing is
not like a regular meal; it contains
no calories).
3) schmoozing - Talking with
friends about your children, grandchildren, the
state of the
world, etc.
While we won't make you sing or dance for
your bagel, you just may meet some new people or find
something interesting to get involved in at Etz Chaim.
So, plan on joining us on Sunday mornings. No
reservations necessary.

Now on the Website-
President's Rosh Hashanah Sermon
On Rosh Hashanah,
Marilyn Streit asked the question, "In what way are we,
the Jewish people, a single people? What is it that
unites us and brings us together?" She shared her
thoughts on this, and some of her experiences in
Jerusalem, in her address to the
congregation.

Social Action
Scholar-In-Residence This
Weekend
Our first Social Action
Scholar-in-Residence Weekend will be this weekend,
Saturday October 13th and Sunday, October14th with Rabbi
David Saperstein. As the Director and Counsel of the
Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, he represents
the national Reform Jewish Movement to the Congress and
the administration. The Washington Post described him as
the "quintessential religious lobbyist on Capitol Hill".
Come hear this dynamic, engaging and inspiring speaker
speak to our own congregation.
On
Saturday, October 13th at 7:30 PM, we will begin with
havdalah,
followed by Rabbi Saperstein's presentation on "Tough
Choices: Jewish Perspectives on America's Social Justice
Challenge," and then dessert and conversation. On
Sunday, October 14th at 9:15 AM. lunch from Schmaltz's
will be followed by Rabbi Saperstein's call to action,
"Organizing Social Justice Programs in Our
Synagogues."
All adult congregants
are urged to attend these programs. They are supported
by a generous bequest from Lou and Bettye Kaplan.

JYG News
The
JYG had their first outing Sunday, September 23rd. We
met up at the temple for pizza. The 6th grade needed a
representative to the JYG so there was a quick election
and Becky Levin was elected. Then we were off to Laser
Quest! We had 27 kids signed up and it was a very
successful event. Everybody had a great time.
Look for upcoming programs
throughout the year. If you're in 6th, 7th or 8th grade
and haven't been to an event, please join us for some
fun.
