Message From Rabbi Cosnowsky
Those of you from the young 80's generation may remember the video game "Frogger."  It was a game of "dodging" taking great care in avoiding a crash with something or someone on the road. Rabbi Cosnowsky, in a way, relates todays way of life with this archaic game.

High Holiday Information
prayer bookThe office has just received a shipment of High Holiday prayer books. If you need to purchase a prayer book, sign up for High Holiday babysitting or sign up for High Holiday Foods please contact the temple office or visit the website for the appropriate forms.

Mishkan Tefilah Prayer Book
Mishkan Tefila Prayer Book On Friday night September 5th we will begin to use our new prayer book, Mishkan Tefilah. The Reform movement has been preparing this book for many years. The Ritual and Religious Committee has planned a variety of activities to help introduce our members to the new prayer book, including study sessions before and during services on Friday nights and on Sunday mornings.
We can also begin to become familiar with the new book online. The website of the Union of Reform Judaism includes several articles that will help us to understand Mishkan Tefilah. One of the striking features of Mishkan Tefilah is its use of a two-page spread for each of the prayers.

School & Youth Activities

Message From Our Educator
We have often said that Etz Chaim is very special and unique. Not only from the parents point of view, but also that of the children who attend religious school. In Anne's article, she explains what makes our synagogue so special.
SYG Kickoff Picnic and Elections
All SYG members are invited to attend the SYG kick-off picnic on Sunday August 24th from 12:00-2:00 PM at the home of Barb Svarz. For further information, and directions, please contact Rabbi Cosnowsky

Etz Chaim Olympic Competition Underway
olympic The Olympics began last Friday and the medal count is well underway. Families are encouraged to surf the net and find as many Jewish athletes as they can find, this year and any years in the past.  If you have not looked at our own Olympic competition, please click here. Have fun.

Looking For Old CD's & DVD's
CD'sDo you have CD's & DVD's at home that you have never used or have outlived their use?  The school is looking for CDs that can be used for sukkah decorations.  We will have a box in the lobby by the gift shop.  Anytime you are coming to the building, please bring any CDs you have around the house that are no longer used.

Computers Needed
campWe are looking for gently used computers for the computer lab. If your computer is a few years old and not being used anymore, please email Anne with specifics. When emailing Anne, please include the make, model, speed(Mhz) and RAM. We are looking to upgrade the lab this summer and have at least three or four computers that are too old to work well. We could also use a few more laptops for use at Westlake.

High Holiday Information Mailing
On Friday, August 8th, the first of our High Holiday mailings were sent out. Included in this mailing was a letter from our President, Rabbis and Ritual and Religious committee with information and forms about parking, services, babysitting, prayer books, yahrzeits, and tickets. Please read all of the information carefully and be aware of all the deadline dates that are listed.

The mailing was sent to all congregants who have filled out and sent in their dues commitment forms. This year, the forms stated that first quarter dues were be payable by August 1, 2008. If you haven't sent in your forms yet, we ask for you to take a few minutes, fill them out, and send them in. If you didn't receive your dues/religious school forms, please contact the Temple office immediately.

Our next High Holiday mailing will be to send you your tickets.

Tallit Holder
The Ritual & Religious Committee is pleased to announce that a Tallit (prayer shawl) holder has been installed in the main classroom hallway directly across from the restrooms. It is our hope that for those that need to leave the sanctuary during service, they simply place their Tallit over the back of the chair. For those that forget, we now have a Tallit holder for just such an occasion.

Thank you to Bruce Faine and the Facilities Committee for completing this project.

Thank You to Our Brotherhood and Sisterhood
The next time you come into the building, be sure to stop in the office to see our new phone system. Thanks to a very generous donation from Brotherhood and Sisterhood, Etz Chaim has moved into the 21st century with a new phone system that has voice mail. When you call during the day, you will still be greeted by a warm and caring voice. However, after the office is closed, voicemail will be available. Please make sure to listen to the full message as the message options have now changed.

Simchas
camp We love to mention anyone who has recently had a simcha on our congratulations page on the website. If there is a life cycle event that you have just celebrated, please share it with us so we can post it. Please contact the temple office with your information.
