Worship

Message From Rabbi Bob
On Friday evening September 5th our new prayer book, Mishkan T'filah, will be introduced to the congregation. There are many differences between the new prayer book and the one which we have used for many years.

Selichot Service - Saturday, September 20th
On a Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah, we begin to recite the prayers of repentance. The Selichot service is the only Jewish worship experience which takes place in the middle of the night. To emphasize the holiness of the moment and the humility with which we approach God, we do not use the electric lights to illuminate the sanctuary. Rather, we conduct the service by candlelight. The service is an overture for the High Holiday liturgy. We say and sing the words and melodies which form the prayers of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

gravesOur evening will begin at 9:30 PM with Havdalah followed by a study program. Dr. Michael Graves will lead the study program for Selichot. His topic will be "What I as a Christian Have Learned from Rabbinic texts." Dr. Graves is an assistant Professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College. He earned his Ph. D. from the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, where Rabbi Bob and Rabbi Cosnowsky were ordained. His area of expertise is Midrash. Rabbi Bob and Dr. Graves have become friends through their participation in a dialogue group for Chicago rabbis and Wheaton Bible professors. We might be surprised to discover that Wheaton College had a Midrash professor.

School & Youth Activities

Message From Our Educator
The new school year is about to begin and Anne has a wonderful program for all grades that will continue throughout the school year. Get your pencils sharpened and your thinking caps on, for the "Year of Family Learning and Doing Together."
Wanted: College Student Addresses
Each year, the Youth Committee collects college student snail mail addresses and email addresses. Why? Because we want to keep our college students connected to the Etz Chaim community. How? We send them the E-Bulletin, "goodie" boxes at festive times of the year, and list them in the Kesher (URJ) directory of Jewish college students.

We need both regular mailing addresses and email addresses of freshmen as well as returning college students. Addresses are not saved from school year to school year, so we need addresses even if you sent them in past years. Please send address information to the synagogue office ASAP by email at cec.office2@congetzchaim.org or contact Susan Hurwitz or Mike Marion in the office at (630) 627-3912.

Looking For Old CD's & DVD's
CD'sDo you have CD's & DVD's at home that you have never used or have outlived their use?  The school is looking for CDs that can be used for sukkah decorations.  We will have a box in the lobby by the gift shop.  Anytime you are coming to the building, please bring any CDs you have around the house that are no longer used.

Computers Needed
campWe are looking for gently used computers for the computer lab. If your computer is a few years old and not being used anymore, please email Anne with specifics. When emailing Anne, please include the make, model, speed(Mhz) and RAM. We are looking to upgrade the lab this summer and have at least three or four computers that are too old to work well. We could also use a few more laptops for use at Westlake.
