Message From Our Educator
Becoming a bar or bat mitzvah changes a person from a child to an adult in the eyes of the Jewish law. We at Etz Chaim have an added "perk" that a student receives following his or her bar or bat mitzvah. Anne tells us about this "perk" and also focuses on the 3rd grade teachers in this article.

Jewish Council on Urban Affairs On March 2nd the JCUA held an afternoon social action program for Jews of the western suburbs at our temple. The Jewish Council on Urban Affairs has been combating poverty, racism and anti-Semitism alongside partners from Chicago's diverse communities for over forty years. After lunch, Aaron Freeman entertained us with the lighter side of Judaism and social justice and then we all studied the topic in workshops. There was one on organizing and social change and another lead by our very own Judy Miller which used texts to study Jewish perspectives on social justice. There was also one for the teens from several temples on social justice. We all learned about the three-week-long summer social justice institutes for teens, Or Tzedek, which the JCUA runs in Chicago. It was a wonderful afternoon of learning, making connections, being challenged and laughter. See www.jcua.org for more information.
There will be an Antiwar Interfaith Prayer Service on Sunday, March 16th at 4:30 PM commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War, to be held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 25 East Benton Street, Naperville. All are welcome. |
