We as Jews understand the difference between the Jewish New Year and the secular New Year. We celebrate it differently and feel differently than our non-Jewish friends. In his article, Rabbi Bob gives us some insight into the meaning of these Days of Awe.

Get Acquainted with Our New Prayer Book,
Mishkan T'filah

On September 5th we began using our new prayer books. The arrival of these books ends our use of Gates of Prayer siddurim. Mishkan T'filah is formatted differently than what we have been used to and to help us understand the changes Rabbi Bob is holding an 'Introduction to Mishkan T'filah" session on Sunday, September 28th at 9:30 AM in the sanctuary. If you are not able to attend the study session, please refer to the website in order to become more familiar with Mishkan T'filah.

Sukkot
sukkotOn Monday, October 13th at 7:00 PM we will celebrate the beginning of Sukkot with a joyous service. The observance will include holiday songs, a special story and the shaking of the lulav. Each child should bring a gaily decorated basket of fruit. During the service, the children will be called to the bima to present their baskets. Following the service, the baskets of fruit will be distributed to the needy of our community. After the service, the congregation will gather in the Sukkah for Kiddush immediately followed by sweets in the Stoller-Soreff Social Hall.

Simchat Torah
The conclusion and renewal of the annual Torah reading cycle will be celebrated at services on Monday, October 20th at 7:00 PM. The service will include the traditional Hafakot with Torah scrolls, accompanied by singing, dancing and waving flags. During the service, new students in the religious school, kindergarten through second grade, will be consecrated. The consecrants will participate in the service and receive a certificate and a gift in honor of the occasion. Following the service, a special treat will be served.

School & Youth Activities

Message from Our Educator
As the Jewish New Year approaches, we think about what we did this past year, and what we can do to right the wrongs or how to make a difference. This past Sunday, as Anne walked through the classroom hall, she overheard the teachers discussing this with their students. It is amazing what she heard.

Wanted: College Student Addresses
Each year, the Youth Committee collects college student snail mail addresses and email addresses. Why? Because we want to keep our college students connected to the Etz Chaim community. How? We send them the E-Bulletin, "goodie" boxes at festive times of the year, and list them in the Kesher (URJ) directory of Jewish college students.

We need both regular mailing addresses and email addresses of freshmen as well as returning college students. Addresses are not saved from school year to school year, so we need addresses even if you sent them in past years. Please send address information to the synagogue office ASAP by email at  or contact Susan Hurwitz or Mike Marion in the office at (630) 627-3912.

Needed: Old CDs & DVDs
CD'sDo you have CDs & DVDs at home that you have never used or have outlived their use? The school is looking for CDs & DVDs that can be used for sukkah decorations. Please bring to the temple office any CDs or DVDs you have around the house that are no longer in use by
October 6th
.
